Wash Your Hands, Clean the Gulf Wednesday, October 27th

We're always taken with good design, be it a sweet tooth-shaped toothbrush holder or a thoughtful airport terminal. But well-designed stuff is even better when it's not about the stuff itself, but a message and a mission.

That's why we love BirdProject, an amazingly small concept with a big heart and spot-on execution. It's set to raise and maintain public awareness of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, helping to provide funding for environmental cleanup initiatives and aid for affected wildlife.

Created by MATTER, a new company based in New Orleans that designs and produces unique products to support social needs initiatives, BirdProject manufactures an exclusive edition of black, bird-shaped soaps. The soap is washed away to reveal a white ceramic bird inside, made from Louisiana clay, that remains as a keepsake and a powerful reminder that we've still got a huge cleanup project ahead of us.

To top it off, BirdProject provides work for New Orleans residents by teaming exclusively with local artists, suppliers, and manufacturers. The result? Powerful partnerships between a wide range of NOLA communities. Oh, and your hands are clean and soft, too. Lather up and help out - it's not just for the birds.
